The medicine will be bought by the American drug production company Gilead to respond to the short-term needs of European patients. Further expected to order an even greater amount.
Remdesiviri is the only drug so far authorised by the EU for anti-use COVID-19, but all available amounts have already been purchased by the United States.
“Data commission signed a contract with the pharmaceutical company Gilead for the security of remdesiviri. From the beginning of August onward, remdesitri will be available to EU member states, as well as to the United Kingdom”, EC spokeswoman Dana Spinant said.
The European Union Commission has agreed to pay 63m euros to buy sufficient amounts that some 30,000 patients can handle.
The peak of COVID-19's pandemic appears to have passed into Europe, but after a new wave of infection spread over the past few days, some nations have restored restrictions.
