Over 50,000 vehicles have not been registered during the time when Kosovo is facing COVID-19 pandemic, and this has hit insurance companies hard, say officials of these companies.

During March and April alone, the sale of police (binding auto insurance) has dropped by 50 percent compared to the previous months.

Kosovo Insurance Association Director Sami Mazrek told Radio Free Europe that the coronary pandemic has brought major difficulties in operation, but the biggest problems have emerged financially.

“During March and April the sale of police officers has dropped by 50 percent. The same situation is during May. The number of vehicles that have not been able to continue the census is estimated to be over 50,000. Since we're still in the pandemic, companies haven't yet calculated the value of the damages they've brought to”, Mazreku says.

While insurance companies have failed to sell insurance officers, they have been forced to cover the damage. Mazreku adds that during just the first three months of this year, the value of damages paid by insurance companies is over 13m euros.

Insurance companies in Kosovo, which are engaged in auto insurance activities, damage insurance, life insurance and others, Mazreku says, have been damaged, but that so far they have no indication that as a result of the pandemic any of the licensed companies in the country could go bankrupt.

Forced auto insurance, expensive “”

The closure of Auto-registering Centres, according to the director of the Kosovo Insurance Association, Sami Mazrek has been the only reason for non-registering the vehicles, for which Mazreku has recommended opening.

But according to a group of citizens who identify themselves as car worshippers, there were other reasons for nonregistering.

Aggan Hajdahja from the group named “Marakli to the 19x1>, told Radio Free Europe, that one of the reasons may be Increase in Automobile Security Price.

“Pandemia has touched people. Citizens have spent money on other things and now they don't have to register the car. Registering a car in Kosovo is not easy, as it takes a lot of money, with that money a citizen spends a month or a half. Also, the last one has increased the price of car safety”, he says.

In November 2019, insurance prices rose above 26 per cent

In November last year, the Kosovo Central Bank had decided to raise tariffs for mandatory passenger vehicles.

This increase, which was over 26 percent, had raised the frustrations of citizens, different groups identified as car worshippers, and civil society.

For vehicles of between 0 and 750 cubic centimeters, for which 59 euros was paid, after November 15th 2019 paid 74,71 euros. Meanwhile, for vehicles that are over 2,701 cubic centimeters, for which it is paid 247,80, it is now paid 313,78 euros.

Hajdarhoja says that despite prices, which are high, cars should be registered, as such endangers communication.

The large number of unregistered cars in Kosovo has been a problem even before the pandemic.

According to data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of February this year, the number of unregistered cars on Kosovo's territory is 148 thousand, and of unregistered cars 51 thousand. Meanwhile, registered vehicles total 356 thousand.
