The general conviction of public health specialists was initially that COVID-19 affects the elderly, but the reality of the past few months has overturned that belief. Drilon and Valbona Burda, an Albanian-American couple living in New York, although at a young age and good health, have had ten difficult days that after diagnosing with COVID-19. In a conversation to “The Voice of America” Drilon explains that in their case, the new age became an obstacle to getting proper medical attention because the health system in New York is overloaded by the epidemic:
Voice of America: Drillo, how long were you in quarantine?
Drilon Burda: We've been in quarantine since March 29th. The first symptoms began that day. It was weird, both in one day. Sunday on the 29th, we started with symptoms, with temperatures. And we had a lot of fever. After 7 p.m. the fever was very intense; I put two-three blankets that I wasn't warm. The first two days were with fever and fever. Then he gave me headaches and body pain, as if someone had beaten us, as they say, especially from my shoulders. One day I was also in pain. Now we've lost taste for about six days.
Voice of America: How were you diagnosed?
Drilon Burda: We called New York City and they didn't take us for a test because so far they don't have much to store for emergencies. We were not considered an emergency case to be tested, and also because we did not work in hospitals and they did not give us time to run a test. We talked to the doctor, he told us you have it. Stay home. I believe you're healthy, you shouldn't have problems. Monitor it, and if you have breathing problems, you have to go to 911.
Voice of America: Drillo, you're a young couple. Have you had existing health problems that could threaten you to cope with your illness?
Drilon Burda: We're about 37 years old, we haven't had health problems. However, we know other people who, like us, have not had health problems but have had X - rayed and released pneumonia.
Voice of America: Have you followed the instructions? How do you think you got the infection?
Drilon Burda: We've been following them very strict, we have three weeks, plus, that we've been home, without going out, we've just gone shopping once or twice, following instructions, with protective, gloves.
Voice of America: As a young couple, with younger children, what difficulties have you had, Drillo?
Drilon Burda: I work at home. I had to take a break from work. The kids are starting to do our curriculum online. This creates its own problems because you have to follow them at work while we were sick. It broke our pace, they couldn't do anything. As with cooking, for children, for us other problems with young children, six years of age and three.
Voice of America: What advice would you give to those who are young in this situation?
Drilon Burda: This disease is quickly transmitted through a meeting with a touch of the door handle, perhaps washing our clothes. I don't know where we got it. Please follow the rules, do not stay close to old people or sick people.
