“I feel even happier for the winning bid because this is the first auction in the Raywa” era, said the president of the Kiyoshi Kimura company, referring to the new imperial era that began in May.
This is a lot of money. But I want buyers to try the best tuna so far”, he added.
The purchased fish was caught in Omi, a small town in northern Honshu, Japan's largest island. The award reached Sunday is the second highest in history in Japan since authorities began registering prices in 1999.
The record was established last year when Kimura paid about 2.6m euros for 278kg of tuna fish.
