The Ministry of Foreign Affairs through a communique condemns the arrest of Kosovo citizens Nezir Mehmetaj by Serbian police at the border checkpoint in Merdare and calls for his immediate release.
Kosovo's Interconnection Office in Belgrade is active and is taking all necessary measures to ensure the release of Nezir Mehmetaj, whose family has already committed a local lawyer.
Mehmetaj has been transferred to the detention centre in Belgrade, has been questioned by Serbian investigators and is burdened with political charges.
The Serbian MUP has committed war crimes in Kosovo, and this institution, as such, cannot and will never be able to play a justice role towards Kosovo citizens. If any institution or individual is responsible for war crimes in Kosovo, it is only the Serbian MUP, its former and current leadership”, said the communique.
On the other hand, it points out that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in close contact with Brussels, and has alarmed European Union institutions for Mr. Mehmetaj, as well as Serbia's ongoing practice of banning Kosovo citizens.
Serbia cannot further prevent the free movement of people and must stop with persecutions and political arrests of Kosovo citizens.
This practice conflicts with the Brussels and the European Union agreement, on the other hand, must take urgent measures to prevent Belgrade's actions against Kosovo citizens and ensure the free movement of citizens.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains actively committed to ensuring Mr. Neziraj and his return to his family”
At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates the May 2019 call, which urges Kosovo's citizens to avoid travel directly and through Serbia, due to political persecution of Kosovo citizens on politically motivated charges by the Serbian government.
