Volcano breaks out on Italian island, a person dies, tourists freak out

The victim is thought to be a farmer who was hit by a falling stone. Another person has been injured, Reuters reports.

We saw the explosion from the hotel. It was a noisy sound”, says Michela Phavorito, who works at an island hotel.

Tourists often climb to the 924m volcano summit and look at its crater, while after-time molten stones are thrown into the sky from there. It wasn't clear if anyone was in the crater at the time of the explosion.

Stromboli is known as the “Fanari of the Mediterranean”. His volcano is one of the most active on the planet and has been in almost constant state of explosion since 1932.
