The vacationers reportedly ran into the sea after seeing ashes emerge from the volcano. The island is the known location for holiday homes for rich and famous people.

Tourists often climb to the 924m volcano summit and look at its crater, while after-time molten stones are thrown into the sky from there. It wasn't clear if anyone was in the crater at the time of the explosion.

Stromboli is known as the “Fanari of the Mediterranean”. His volcano is one of the most active on the planet and has been in almost constant state of explosion since 1932.
