The French government's top official stated via his Facebook page that he has handed the letter of resignation to Prime Minister Edouard Philippe.
He has been the target of harsh criticism since the research site “Mediapart” reported that he has made luxury dinners for his friends at the state residence in a historic Paris building at the time he was mayor of the municipality's lower house.
According to this website, dinners were arranged for the minister's close social circle and organised by his wife, who is a journalist in the magazine “Gala”. It is reported that between 10 and 30 guests were invited to these meals.
The food menu contained guaca, champagne, and expensive wines, which cost up to 500 euros per bottle.
The publication of this scandal is being deemed very harmful to the French government because De Rugy was the leader of President Macro's environmental protection policy.
The scandal was highlighted at a time when the government is under pressure to reduce expenses and food losses. The government has also been accused of doing very little to combat climate change, writes the Guardian”.
