He made these comments on the 20th anniversary of KFOR's entry into Kosovo, with whom he spoke about the work of this mission to ensure security for all citizens indiscriminately.
D'Addario has revoted memories of her entering Pristina.
When I think of Pristina in 1999, I remember the feeling of despair and fear, but also the feeling that the worst was over after those disastrous months of civil war. Many people had been displaced there was a lack of security and basic services. We were part of an unprecedented gathering of United Nations, a powerful force in its commitment to intervene on the ground to make a difference despite all challenges. Today, we remember with deep gratitude all who gave their lives for this important mission. KFOR has offered security and freedom of movement for all, enabling the creation of conditions for relaunching services, political and civil life”, he said.
KFOR leader has stressed that Kosovo has noted progress over the years, but still needs to be made.
This progress has not come for free. During these 20 years more than 200 soldiers lost their lives during the KFOR service. Kosovo is a witness to the development of some energetic society. The journey is full of challenges, and there are many challenges still to be overcome. And when I look back, I no longer see people trying to escape, their heads, but I see citizens willing to build their children's welfare and future. There is still much to be accomplished. However, current developments in the Balkans mark the path towards progress and integration that we can follow. A reconciliation with the past requires courage for compromise that can come only with vision and devotion to humans. We cannot close our eyes to challenges, but neither can we overlook the future and keep looking forward and building the future on progress achieved so far. The time has come for all people in Kosovo to devote themselves to sustainable reconciliation. This can be accomplished if we remain faithful to the vision, to the future, to move forward, avoiding the snares of the inflammatory rhetoric. People deserve better and they'll win this. It's time to remember, but also move forward”, KFOR commander said.
Otherwise, KFOR is the biggest operation of NATO in Europe. It remains in Kosovo today as a force guaranteeing a safe and secure environment for all communities.
