Italy's former prime minister, Matteo Renzi, believes Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel, should continue to play a leading role in Europe after she ends her country's mandate as leader.
For Renzin, Merkel must assume the role of the president of the Council of Europe, or the position of EU foreign policy chief, Euronews writes.
In his book “Un'altra strada” (another way), the former Italian prime minister has written: “It would be desirable that a leading figure like Angela Merkel, who, after leaving the Chancellor's position in the coming months after 15 years of constant leadership, could continue to serve Europe with a different capacity”.
“Merkel could be the right person to run the Foreign Policy, but that she would also be a good candidate for Council Chairman”.
The “The Europeans should demand Angela Merkel to be European Council president. I don't know if they're gonna do this” wrote in Renz's book.
Currently, Council of Europe chairman Donald Tusk's position is held by Chief of Foreign Political Federica Moghrini. /Periscopi
