Russian President Vladimir Putin has decorated it with the Friendship Order, Nikolai Malinov, who has been charged with spying by Bulgarian authorities.
The award-sharing ceremony was held in Moscow on November 4th, days after a Bulgarian court allowed Nikolay Malinov to leave the country for a five-day period.
Mainov, a former MP from the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), which heads a pro-Russian non-governmental organisation, was charged in September with spying and money laundering for two Russian organisations.
Bulgarian prosecutors say he was working with those organisations in an effort to influence Sofia's foreign policies, followed. REL.
Prosecutors said they had found a document, in Russian, prepared by Maliinov, referring to the necessary “ri-oriential orientation of Bulgaria”.
The “Document outlines steps to be taken to fully regulate Bulgaria's geopolitical orientation far from the West, towards Russia”, Gesev said.
The Bulgarian court on bail released Malinov in September, but was prevented from leaving Bulgaria.
Bulgaria, Moscow's most loyal country in the Soviet period, is now a member of NATO and the European Union, but has close cultural and historical ties with Russia, which remains its largest energy supplier.
