Rome is facing a garbage crisis that could keep many schools closed even after the end of the weekend vacation on Monday.
The Italian capital has long had problems with waste, but a fire that has destroyed the city's main intensification has escalated the crisis and angry residents have begun to burden the problem by burning garbage in protest of the authorities' lack of action.
Roma school principals' association has written a letter to mayor Virginia Raji, warning that many schools will not be able to open Monday due to the situation.
In recent days, because of the festivals, Rome is experiencing a real sanitation emergency. Garbage dumps are flooded, littered by garbage, rats now roam not only on sidewalks but also in schools, empty classrooms because of winter holidays.
School principals' association requires cleaning sidewalks around schools, otherwise children will not be able to enter classes. / TCh
