Migration dispute to continue dominance in Switzerland

Switzerland has rejected the initiative <x0m>No 10-million Switzerland”, aimed at limiting population growth and hardening migration policies.
However, the migration debate is expected to continue to dominate Swiss politics even in the coming months.
The Swiss People's Party Swiss People's Party Swiss People's People's Party (SVP), which had proposed the initiative, has already warned new initiatives, including demand for stricter border controls and measures against asylum abuse. There is also a referendum on new agreements with the European Union.
Political experts estimate migration remains one of the most sensitive issues in Swiss society and one of the citizens' main concerns. The discussion, according to them, has evolved from fears of “overloaded by foreigners” in concerns of pressure on infrastructure and public services.
At previous polls, Switzerland has shown narrow political divisions for similar issues, including immigration initiatives and relations with the EU.
Analysts stress that, despite the rejection of the initiative, migration issues and reports with the EU will remain at the centre of political debate in the country. /Albinfo. ch
