Warnings on reducing KFOR troops, Germany: Will continue engagement in Kosovo

Following warnings of reducing NATO troops in Kosovo, one of the most powerful European states, Germany, has responded.

Last Friday from NATO military headquarters have warned of the possibility of reducing its security force in Kosovo, drawing some troops and equipment.

In a response to Klankosova.tv, German authorities have announced that this state is not planning to reduce its troops in Kosovo, operating within the NATO mission.

In response, Germany's Armed Forces will continue their mission and engagement in Kosovo.

“Bundeswehr will continue its engagement in Kosovo. ”, a spokesman for Germany's Armed Forces Command, has said briefly.

Also, a few days ago, even Bundestag The German had voted for the continuation of its mission to KFOR.

Otherwise, on Friday, June 12th, it has been reported that since the security situation in Kosovo remains generally stable, NATO will optimise KFOR's presence in Kosovo and will gradually adjust its current number of troops over the coming year.

So stated U.S. Air Force General Alexus G. Grinkeich, Supreme Allied Forces Commander in Europe (SACEUR).

Among other things, he had added that NATO would not allow the creation of a security vacuum.

The planned reductions are expected to be implemented in line with national rotation, delocation and troop withdrawal between this year and next year. This optimism will take place gradually and in line with conditions on the ground, while it can be annulled if security developments require it.

Due to continued improvement of the security situation in Kosovo in recent years, NATO in January halted the delocation of reserve forces under its mission in Kosovo, after more than two years of continuous rotation.

Since 1999, KFOR's presence has been constantly adapted to ensure that the mission remains suitable for its purpose and to respond to developments in the security situation. After increasing tensions and violence in 2023, including unjustified attacks on KFOR peacekeepers in Zvecan, KFOR received the largest reinforcement in more than a decade, with the delocation of nearly 1,000 additional soldiers.

Following the warnings, Italy had also been declared regarding the possibility of reducing its troops in Kosovo.
