Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan has said Monday that the attack on Turkey's economy does not differ from any attack against the flag of this state, adding that the purpose of creating the currency crisis is to “judge Turkey and its people”, Reuters broadcasts.
He has made these statements in a speech before the launch of the four-day festival for marking the festival of Kurban Bajrami.
The Turkish currency, the lira, has been depreciated by 40 per cent this year, following concerns about Erdogan's influence on monetary policies, as well as worsening diplomatic relations with the United States.
“Sulmet to our economy is no different than the attacks on our calls for prayer or our flag. The goal is the same. The goal is to kneel Turkey and its people”, Erdogan has said in a televised speech.
At the time of high diplomatic tensions between Ankara and Washington, several shootings have been heard Monday morning outside the US Embassy in Ankara, though no casualties have been reported.
