Trump ready to meet with Iranian leaders “without conditions”, Tehran refuses

US President Donald Trump announced that he is ready to meet with Iran's leaders “without precondition” and “at any time they want”. But at a press conference Monday, he also said that “brutal regime” Iran should never be allowed to possess nuclear weapons. Last week Mr. Trump [...]
Iran's case was addressed during the joint press conference between President Donlad Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Cita.
“The prime minister also agrees that Iran's brutal regime should never be allowed to have nuclear weapons. Never! We encourage all countries to pressure Iran to end all its dangerous activities. United States welcomes Italy's partnership in these vital efforts“, said Mr. Trump.
But asked if he would be willing to meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhan, Mr. Trump said he would meet with the Iranians, at any time they want to meet and without prior conditions. He said meetings are useful in easing potentially dangerous tensions and that his recent meetings with the Russian and North Korean leader were a good example.
“Of course I would meet with Iranian leaders if they wanted to meet, but I don't know if they're ready. They're going through a tough time. I ended the Iran deal. It was a funny deal. I guess they'll finally ask you to meet.“.
Officials in Tehran have ruled out the possibility of talks with Washington, saying the United States has shown they are not trustworthy.
Disagreements between the United States and Iran date back to 1979 since the clergy took power in Tehran. In May, Mr. Trump again provoked Iran's anger, with the withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear agreement reached in 2015 between Iran and six world powers. He has called for a much tougher agreement that would control Iran's conduct in the region, as well as the dismantling of his nuclear programme.
The Iranian president warned that Mr. Trump's policies could lead to what he described as the “mother of all wars”, a statement that prompted a harsh reaction of Mr. Trump.
But a senior Iranian general said Thursday his forces are ready to face any challenge that comes from Mr. Trump.
“I tell Mr. Trump to know we're there, where you can't imagine.“, said Qassem Solejmani, Commander of the Revolutionary Force
For now, Iran has more reason to worry about American economic sanctions than its military power. Sanctions are forcing some foreign businesses to withdraw from the country, which could seriously damage Iran's economy. / VOA
