Faid, 46, was serving a 25-year sentence for a failed theft during which a police officer was killed.
This is his second escape from prison: In 2013 he escaped after taking four hostage guards and destroying a number of doors. He completed that escape for less than half an hour after arriving at a prison in northern France.
In 2009, he wrote a book on his experiences of growing up in the past suburbs of Paris crime and was diagnosed in a life of crime.
Faid and his associates fled the prison yard, which was not protected by a network without hurting anyone, the French news page Europe 1 reported.
The helicopter then flew to the nearby Gonesse area. It was found by fully burned local police.
