Author David Bienenstock says that cannabis has been widespread in the Middle East 2,000 years ago and that people used it to heal the sick.
The church used Kinah-bosem, a component that, according to Bienenstock, was an extract of cannabis. After being absorbed by the skin, this extract helped treat physical and mental diseases well before mass production of drugs.
But many historians reject this theory, saying that evidence that Kah-bosem has been too weak to deal with.
