A group of New Castle University scientists have compiled the following map showing the level of plastic waste for every country, as well as for sea banks.
According to this map, Albania has more than 5 tonnes of plastic waste per mile/tracare on its surrounding shores. Yet again, there is high levels of pollution for the earth. It's more than 10,000 tons a year of unmanaged plastic waste.
While plastic has many valuable uses, we have become dependent on single plastic or available with serious environmental consequences. Worldwide, one million plastic bottles have been bought every minute, while up to 500 trillion single - used plastic bags are used worldwide each year. In total, half of all plastic products are designed to be used only once and then discarded, leaving lasting traces of the environment. Management and extinction of plastic waste is not without reason part of the United Nations' 2030 targets strategy.
According to the map provided by New Castle University scientists, the most data for all countries in the world, plastic remains are identified in the ocean from Arctic to Antarctic and from surface to sea. Millions of tons of tons end up in the sea every year, most of the places where it has been thrown carelessly on land and rivers (lightly), and then made it to sea ( yellow). Ocean currents carry floating debris in remote corners of the world.
Plastic wastes are now so present in the natural environment that scientists have even suggested may serve as a geological indicator of the anthropocene era.
In an estimate made earlier by the Monitor, Albanian is one of the most high plastic waste sites in Europe. According to INSTAT data, during 2016 each Albanian has produced an average of 396kg of waste, out of which 39.6 have been plastic waste. Compared to the production of waste in Europe, we rank among the countries with high generation. According to Eurostat, an average European Union citizen has generated 31kg of plastic.
The country that generates more plastic waste in Europe is Ireland at 61kg per population every year. The second is Luxembourg with 52kg. Bulgaria, compared to those two countries, produces fewer plastic waste per resident, only 14kg.
Research by the Economic Forum and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation estimate that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the seas if they continue to be produced at this rate.
China's decision to ban foreign waste imports has added pressure to industrialised countries likecc is the United Kingdom to recycle more plastic, from what they produce themselves, rather than export it abroad. /Monitor
