Indonesia's state news agency reported that a hole caused the ferry to start filling up with water. The rescue effort was initially complicated by bad weather, which prevented large ships from approaching. However, a fleet of small ships, including local fishing boats, went to the ferry to help people escape.
Deadly naval accidents are not rare in Indonesia. Just two weeks ago, another boat incident occurred on a volcanic lake in Sumatra. More than 190 people were considered drowning in that incident, reportedly one of the worst marine accidents in the country for decades.
