“Turkey and Italy want to develop economic relations as well as the defence industry in which confidence is needed to co-operate on the ground. The added value is great. The joint NATO partnership should be the main cause for this kind of co-operation”, Mattiolo said.

Ankara had made an initial agreement with the Italian-French consortium on 14 June 2017 to develop Turkey's national defence system. The proposed system will be a more developed version of the current Eurosam SAMP-T air defence systems.
