Months ago, the Kosovo Assembly met one of the criteria set by the European Union in terms of the visa liberalisation process.
It's about ratification of demarcation with Montenegro, until there's only one last condition left to meet, so that citizens can move freely to the Shengen area.
Thus, the EU has conditioned Kosovo institutions to fight corruption and organised crime, for which it has said it now expects concrete evidence that this phenomenon has been fought.
The Kosovo government has commented on this EU requirement, saying it is constantly working in this direction.
Government spokeswoman Donjet Gashi has told Indexline that the chief executive has undertaken several initiatives to combat corruption.
The Republic of Kosovo's “prime minister has so far organised a series of high-level meetings with all relevant institutions, in which the EU and US have also been involved. In these meetings, besides a clear mirror of the situation on the ground, new dynamic engagement in the work of the country's institutions to fight corruption and organised crime” has also been required, Gashi has said.
In fact, according to her, meeting the last criterion set for Kosovo is the request not only of the EU but also of the Government.
“Prime Minister Haradinaj has always said the fight against organised crime and corruption is not only the EU requirement, but also our daily agenda, for the good of citizens. We also remind you that this year has been declared as a year of rule of law and law, and this issue is a daily agenda of the government”, Gashi has added.
We remember that in early May, a European Commission delegation had visited Kosovo to assess Kosovo's progress on the remaining criteria for visa liberalisation with the EU, respectively, the fight against corruption and organised crime. While European Commission officials have not specified when they will make the report public on the issue of visa liberalisation with Kosovo.
