Magnus Wenmann is a Swedish photo reporter, who fired the thrilling photo in March 2017.
Janet (right) has been hospitalised and has not responded for two and a half years. The sister, Ibada, is next to her, who reacted for the last time 6 months ago. Both suffer from “Resignion Syndrome” (Resign Syndrome) at Hordal, Sweden.
This syndrome is linked to a long - term disorder that affects mainly children and teenagers psychologically traumad during the long and difficult migration process. Janet and Ibada are refugees from Kosovo who are affected precisely by this terrible disorder; they are passive, do not move, do not speak and are incapable of eating or drinking. So they can't stimulate physical movements.
The reasons are not yet clear, but most experts are of the opinion that trauma is the main cause.
As it is published on the page of “World Press Photo”, syndrome has affected a large number of refugees aged 7-19, mostly from former Soviet countries. It is commonly mentioned that taking a home for the families of the sick has led to improved their health.
The photo has received the first prize in the “People” category and has been widely published.
