King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud assumed the throne after the death of his half-brother, King Abdullah in 2015.
He was governor of Riyadh province for 48 years before becoming minister of defence in 2011 and a crown prince a year later.
He came to the throne at age 79.
King Salman is part of an influential faction within the royal family formed by the sons and grandchildren of King Abdulaziz and his favorite wife, Princess Hassa al-Sudairi.
After the death of the former king, Fahd, who led the kingdom from 1982 to 2005, and two crown princes -- Sultan and Nayef -- Salman was the most powerful surviving member of this faction.
As minister of defence he was the head of the Saudi Army and joined the US and other Arab countries in air strikes in Syria in 2014 against the Islamic State.
King Salman is reportedly not interested in political and social reforms in the country as his predecessor.
King Salman's priorities are maintaining stability in Saudi Arabia.
The health of 82-year-old has always been a matter of interest. He is believed to have suffered at least one heart attack that left him with limited movement on the left flank.
Meanwhile, yesterday a potential stamp was reported against him when shots were heard near his palace.
But police said an unauthorized threat had collapsed.
At this time, the King is said not to have been in the palace.
