Spain's prime minister, Mariano Rahoy, has once again testified that his country is one of Serbia's best friends.
He has refused to participate in the Western Balkan Summit, which will be held during May in Sofia. The reason for this will be the presence of Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, writes El Pais.
Rahoy reportedly will not be located in the same country as Thaci until official Madrid recognises Kosovo's independence, but also other things by citing Thaci's biography, which he claims is criminal.
Rahoy's decision to boycott Thaci comes just two months after Spain sent a document to Brussels, in which Kosovo is said to be an integral part of Serbia and that Madrid will never allow a false state to enter the EU.
According to El Pais, Rahoy was planning to attend the May 17th summit, but has cancelled it to find out there will be Hashim Thaci.
“Rahoy will not attend this summit because he does not want to be photographed with Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, until Spain recognises its independence. Catalonia is using the Kosovo doctrine to justify separation from Spain's legal system, which causes Rahoy not to participate”, writes the Spanish newspaper, broadcasts Klan Kosova.
Her sources say European Council President Donald Tusk has taken over to persuade Rahoy to participate in this summit, due to the importance of continuing relations with Western Balkan countries.
Bulgaria, which heads the EU presidency, has reportedly considered the possibility of convincing Spain to remove the Kosovo flag from that of other countries, but that was not enough for Spanish officials either.
They have insisted that neither should Kosovo representatives be there.
