Note what British reporters say about Rambouille in the book about Thaci

These days have been 19 years since the Paris Agreement, which came after negotiations in Rambouillet. Kosovo delegation led by Hashim Thaci, then representative of The KLA, had signed the agreement offered by international co-ordinators, while the Serbian delegation had signed the political draft agreement on self-government in Kosovo.

The Serbian side had ruled out the compromises that were envisioned by the international side, even though it was warned they would be bombarded by NATO peacekeeping forces with refusing to accept the signing of the agreement. But what would happen if the Serb side had also accepted this agreement?

In the biographic book of two British authors “State, Modern Stateman” for President Hashim Thaci himself, Thaci gives clarification for the performance of negotiations in Paris's Rambouillet. KLA political representative Hashim Thaci, according to British authors, was among the only ones who in Rambouille thought of Kosovo's independence, until for the international community and part of the Kosovo delegation that was utopic.

There were two points, they said, that shared Thaci with the international community. Thaci had insisted on having a clarity on Kosovo's status, through organising a referendum, and if the Serb side does not sign, there is NATO intervention.

But, and after the enormous pressure that had been done on a 31-year-old, Thaci, according to authors, had never given up on the people's right to self-rule and the next point for NATO to intervene if Serbia did not sign this agreement.

I made a plan that any agreement to be signed should be only worth three years. After a temporary period, the agreement had to be written that the people of Kosovo have the right to vote for their future. So, for the people of Kosovo to have the right to hold a referendum on self-rule”, Thaci was quoted as saying of British authors.

According to the book's authors, the biggest pressure during the negotiations was on Hashim Thaci, because he was the biggest opponent. Finally, Albright and her spokesman had succeeded in convincing Thaci to sign the agreement after long, trying conversations and pressures. Renowned British journalists write that they had assured Thaci that NATO would intervene if Milosevic did not sign the agreement, until on the other hand had assured him that conditions set by the Kosovo delegation and the international community were unaware of Milosevic.

Serbia's “Thaci has needed a reputation to convince the rest of the KLA to accept the” agreement, the book says.

According to authors, Thaci was guaranteed that if Kosovo signs the agreement and Serbia does not, then NATO would intervene in Kosovo.
