From the wealth of former Libyan President Muammar Gaddhafi, who has been frozen in Belgium, 10 billion euros have disappeared.
In 2013 the bank accounts of Gaddafi companies in Belgium's banks have been 16 billion euros, while in 2017 the access approved in these funds has reached up to 5 billion euros, it broadcasts newspapers.net
“Ende is missing somewhere less than 5 billion euros in four open bank accounts at Euroclear Bank SA”, says Danny Goeman, deputy prosecutor in Belgium.
The remaining funds are still subject to seizures, but so far the bank is likely to refuse access to accounts, so prosecutors are threatened by drastic measures.
Judicial organs have faced a lack of money in the fall of 2017, when investigative judge Michel Clay, who was responsible for the investigation into the laundering of Gaddafi's alleged narrow circle money, demanded the seizure of frozen Libyan assets.
This pass has been frozen since March 2011, in line with UN Resolution 1973. Belgium has never asked for the merger of these funds.
According to the media, there are many indicators that Belgium has not respected UN rules for freezing these accounts.
Prior to 2011, when Moammar Gaddhafi fell from power, Libya was a major oil exporter. To better control, in 2006, the government established Libya's Investigating Authorities to invest money earned from the sale of oil abroad.
However, with NATO intervention in 2011, The UN imposed sanctions against Libyan government property and practically confiscated $66 billion from the LIA, which existed in the EU and the US. In the EU, however, national governments have frozen only the original sums, while the interests and dividers that occurred after 2011 were free.
An investigation last month conducted in Brussels shows that someone has regularly taken an interest in Gaddafi's 16 billion euros.
However, while a legal battle is under way, the question is -- where did 10 billion euros go away?
