The Christian Adventist Church in Rwanda was hit yesterday by lightning, which killed 16 people and injured 140 others, South province Governor Rose Murashankvano said today.

She said 140 believers were injured and sent to a hospital, and two are in serious condition.

Most of the victims died immediately when the thunder struck the church in the southern neighbourhood of Nyaruguru, local Mayor Habitgeko Francois told AFP.

The lightning also killed a student in the area Friday. /21Media
