Croatian prosecutors have reportedly charged 22 ethnic Serbs with war crimes committed during the conflict in the 1990s.
The prosecutor's office in Zagreb has said through a statement today that 22 Croatian Serbs are accused of killing 22 civilians and two police officials, who were held in three areas east of the state in 1991.
Serbs have been part of a paramilitary group that has acted in the east, during 1991-95, in the war between Croats and Serb forces supported by Belgrade.
The Prosecutor's Office has said the eight suspects have ordered 14 other persons “for beating and killing” of Croatian civilians and for “illegal hostage taking”.
The charges also claim that eight people have led other people to “torture and kill prisoners of war” and burn down and destroy their homes and businesses.
The prosecution claims the suspects are responsible for grenades, which have killed civilians and destroyed their properties.
The alleged crimes were committed in the villages of Cetechovac, Balinci and Cholug in Croatia in September 1991.
