The former Black Panther activist, who spent 43 years in solitary confinement, was released from a prison in the United States after a decade of legal war to prove his innocence.
Albert Woodfox is the last of the activists of “Andgola Three” who enjoyed freedom in a case that provoked rage among rights groups.
A federal judge has ordered his unconditional release in June.
Woodfox twice managed to overturn his sentence for crimes, but the Louisian prosecutor was determined to pursue a third trial and managed to release Woodfod in appeal.
He will be released on his 69th birthday.
Although I was looking forward to guarantee my innocence in a new trial, concerns about my health and my age have led me to settle the case now and seek my release now,” said Woodfox.
More than 800,000 people have been confined to isolated cells in the United States.
