U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has extended temporary protection to nearly seven thousand Syrians living in the United States as the war in their homeland continues.
They were protected from deportation under the humanitarian programme “Temporary Protection Status”.
The president has cancelled this programme for several countries in recent months, thus affecting immigrants from El Salvador, Haiti and Nicaragua.
However, this extension is not worth new applicants coming from Syria.
For Syrians who only live and work in the US, TPS will be extended for another 18 months.
As the Syrians entered the country in August 2016, they will be expelled from the program.
Created in 1990, The TPS allows immigrants from countries considered insecure to live and work legally in the US.
