The controversial French prince had returned to Fredensborg Castle, north of Copenhagen, as he was in hospital because of a lung infection.
His pompous style had to be, but also criticised by the Danish, reports “BBC”, report Periscope.
Frustrous with his royal title, he declared in 2017 that he would not want to be buried near his wife.
The 77-year-old queen has accepted her husband's decision, in which she has broken the 459-year-old tradition of burying royal husbands together.
The prince, who was diagnosed with dementia last year, died “in his sleep” in the castle, the Royal House announced.
