The accident occurred at Lake Carces, 50 kilometers north of St. Tropez.
At least five people are believed to have found death.
A search-saving operation has begun to locate a sixth person aboard one of the helicopters. The circumstances of the accident remain unclear.
Helicopters belonged to a pilot school called Ealat, which says he deals with pilot training for the army.
