Martin Schulz announced this evening the immediate departure from the German Social-Democratic Party's leadership, but the short-listed replacement Andrea Nahles needs to be patient to succeed Schulzin because of disagreements within party structures.
“I received the party's instance that I will leave my posts starting from today”, the media in Berlin said.
The SPD needs a renovation on staff and programme plans.
Martin Schulz announced last week that he would leave his post. He was aiming to pass the party's direction in crisis, Andrea Nahles, currently head of the SPD parliamentary group, and this candidacy for only a few weeks, in hopes of appointing Minister of Foreign Affairs of the upcoming Angela Merkel government.
Within days, this scenario was questioned. Martin Schulz first had to step down as head of diplomacy in the face of criticism from the party's base that he thinks more about his personal career.
