“Macedonia” promotes mass gatherings in Athens

Hundreds of thousands of Greeks filled the streets of Athens, in a mass protest under the debate on Macedonia's name, which has been continuing for decades.
Many Greeks disagree that their northern neighbour will be called Macedonia because such a name, according to them, implies territorial claims for Macedonia's northern Greek province.
The numerous protesters expressed their clear stand against Greek government proposals for resolving the issue.
In addition to representatives of the clergy, the famous composer Mikis Theodorakis, 92, spoke to the mass crowd.
Between “and” with Greek flags and numerous slogans carrying protesters, slogans like “Macedonia is Greece” or “do not touch Macedonia”.
The left government of “Syriza” says this diplomatic issue by resolving and proposing versions of the name with the term “Macedonia” inside, something many protesters will by no means accept.
As talks continue at the UN, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias has received death threats for this government stance. The Greek Orthodox Church is a powerful party on the side of protesters, demanding that the term “Macedonia be denied using “to a new name of the northern neighbour.
One of the UN negotiator's favorite proposals, Matthew Nimetz, appears to be the “Republic of New Macedonia”, but for the numerous protesters, this is a step beyond the “red line”.
