President Donald Trump has not promised Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan during the meeting two weeks ago of G20 that he will extradite Turkish cleric Fetall Gulen, who lives in the US, said a senior White House official Monday.
“While at the meeting with President Erdogan in G20, the president disagreed on the extradition of Fetullah Gulen,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Erdogan blames Gulen for orchestrating the failed coup, where part of soldiers with tanks and helicopters attacked Parliament and shot unarmed civilians, Reuters writes.
Turkey has long sought the extradition of Gulen, who lives in the US for nearly two decades.
On Sunday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevluut Cavusoglu said Trump had told Erdogan during the meeting in Buenos Aires that the United States “was working for the extradition of Gulen and other people”, Kosovo Press broadcasts.
Gulen on the other hand denies any involvement in the failed coup.
While Trump last month said the cleric's extradition is not part of efforts to ease Turkish pressure in Saudi Arabia over the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul.
