UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, in the newest report on Kosovo, has welcomed the determination of Kosovo and Serbia to, through dialogue mediated by the EU, reach the normalisation of relations, while warning at the same time that several incidents have occurred in the past three months that are the result of interethnic tensions.
“The security situation in Kosovo, during the reporting period, has been calm, even though interethnic tensions in some cases have gone to incidents”, Guterres said in his quarterly report on the situation in Kosovo, which Security Council ambassadors will consider on November 14th, reports “Tanjug”.
Guterres, in the report that has seen the Serbian public television portal, has added that statements by Kosovo and Serbian leaders for border change have aroused concern among Kosovo Serbs, but also the dispute between Belgrade and the leaders of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Kosovo, timing conveys.
According to him, these statements have sparked reactions in the region as well as in the international community, which have depended on calls for examination of all possible options that would lead to the solution, to the expression of serious concerns related to possible consequences that could have territorial corrections to the stability of the region.
The UN chief has welcomed the determination of Kosovo and Serbia, so that through dialogue, they can reach the normalisation of the reports and at the same time have thanked the leaders of both sides for the commitment and determination they have shown in the process of resolving open issues.
“I am concerned about renewed tensions related to construction in specific protected areas”, he added, according to RTS, referring to events about the Decani Monastery.
Guterres, once again, has shown his regret for his lack of interest in the process of collecting tools for a fund dedicated to Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians who in Kosovo have been victims of lead poisoning.
“contributions to this fund would be a tangible testimony to international support for these sensitive communities and their urgent needs”, Guterres writes.
