Republican Trump, in an interview aired on Sunday on the “60 Minutes” CBS channel, says Mattis has no indication he is leaving, but added: “may happen for him to leave. I think he's like a Democrat, if you want to know my true opinion. ”
The American leader described the retired general as “a good man, we go very well, but he can leave because at some point, everyone leaves.
Trump, during his 21-month administration, has fired or forced dozens of key officials to leave, or has seen others he liked resign, including UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, who said last week she would leave her post at the end of the year.
Mattis, leading the American Army, has repeatedly been at odds with President Trump and many officials of his administration, including national security adviser John Bolton. Mattis, in the middle of 2017, called for more diplomatic options with North Korea in connection with the Phoenix nuclear weapons programme, a stance President Trump eventually supported that led to the June summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. / VoA
