Trump said in an interview for Axios on the HBO channel that he plans to sign an executive order to end the current policy, which envisions the right to citizenship in the east. “is in progress. It'll be”, he said.
We are the only country in the world where a person can come, bear a child and the child automatically becomes an American citizen... with all the benefits of this status. It's ridiculous. It must end”, he added.
Banning this policy will most likely face legal challenges in court.
President Trump said he had discussed this idea with his legal adviser, who, as he said, informed him that there is no need for a constitutional amendment to end the right to citizenship at birth.
A legal challenge meant that courts should make a decision on a debate born with the 14th Constitution Amendment, which says:
The “all persons born or obtained citizenship in the United States, and subject to this kind of jurisdiction, are citizens of the United States and the state where they live”.
However, some conservatives insist that the amendment was only intended to obtain citizenship for babies born in the United States by parents who are legally permanent residents.
President Trump's plan to end this policy further escalates his administration's efforts to make immigration a major campaign issue before the 6 November elections for Congress.
In the last two weeks, Mr. Trump and his conservative allies have been warning about the convoy of immigrants from Central America, which is several hundred miles of wet land from the southern border of America.
On Monday, President Trump described the convoy as a “invasion of our country”, while his administration declared plans to send at least 5,000 and 200 troops to the border by the end of this week.
