As Bulgaria assumes the rotating EU Council presidency, Fajon has a warning that Western Balkan countries hoping to join the bloc may lose patience.
Sofia has made it clear that one of its presidency's key priorities is the revival of membership bids.
“We also look somewhere at rising nationalism and somewhere at the loss of the new generation”, Fajon said.
The European Commission will publish a strategy next month, expected to provide basic foundations for Serbia and Montenegro to become the first EU candidate countries.
We must enable this region a better life, create prospects for young people, open borders, and live as good neighbours. This relates to the way we should increase our credibility not only within the region and Europe, but throughout the world”, she stressed.
State and government leaders will be in Sofia for an informal summit on the Western Balkans in May, as Bulgaria appears to be seeking to leave a mark on EU enlargement.
