International news agency Reuters reported on the assassination of Civic Initiative leader Oliver Ivanovic.
Serbian “Lander in Kosovo Oliver Ivanovic, who was facing trials for the killings of Albanians during 1998-99, has been shot to death outside his office in northern Mitrovica on Tuesday, a prosecutor has said, Reuters, broadcast Periscopi.
The agency writes that as a sign of protest against the assassination, Serbia has reported that it will cancel the new round of dialogue with Pristina sponsored by the European Union.
In this case, Serbia's President Aleksandar Vuciqi has called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council.
“can confirm that Oliver Ivanov has died as a result of the shooting. Investigators are on the scene”, the Mitrovica prosecutor, Fatmir Syla, has told Reuters.
On the other hand, the European Union has condemned Ivanovic's murder, calling for calm to be maintained.
“We expect the relevant authorities for rule of law in Kosovo not to save efforts to find the chief and bring to justice without delay”, EU spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic has said.
Reuters writes that Ivanovic is known as a moderate politician in Kosovo. He was an intercessor. NATO, the United Nations and the European Union that were deployed in Kosovo after the war.
In 2016 he was convicted of war crimes, on charges of killing Albanians during the war, and sentenced to 9 years in prison. But after appealing the decision, he was released last year and allowed to defend himself in freedom.
Kosovo Office Director Marko Djuric, Ivanovic's murder, has called “akt terrorism”.
“This is an act against all Serbian people, a criminal and terrorist act that should be punished”, Djuric said, who was following the dialogue in Brussels.
Reuters writes that about 50,000 Serbs live in northern Kosovo and that they refuse their integration into the majority Albanian state, which has declared independence in 2008, writes Periscopi.
Reports between Serbia and Kosovo have been tense since 2008, but in 2013 the parties have agreed to dialogue in Brussels, as an effort to normalise reports, and as a condition of the EU for the two states to score progress towards membership in the European bloc.
