The Basel naturalization office rejected the request because the girls refused swimming, which was mandatory for students. On January 1st, this practice now applies throughout Switzerland.
The new Civil Rights Act lists new integration criteria, as reported by «SonntagsZeitung», passes albinfo.ch.
Thus, someone who wants to be naturalized should not only learn a local language but also respect the country's constitutional values. This also includes pursuing schooling and therefore mandatory participation in swimming lessons.
The Federation of Islamic Organisations in Switzerland has criticised a similar criterion of taking citizenship.
