Young, former U.S. Navy pilot, in 1972 was 9th of the 12 people who walked on the moon.
“We are saddened by the loss of astronaut John Young”, it wrote NASA in a statement posted on Twitter.
Young has become one of the most successful astronauts in the history of the US Space Program.
He has flown into space twice during NASA's Gemini programme in the mid - 1960s, twice in Apollo's lunar missions and twice on spaceships in the 1980s.
He retired in 2004, after 42 years with the US Space Agency.
