Serbia charged with war crimes in court, defence, prosecution speak

The Constitutional Court in Mitrovica, the prosecution and the defence have submitted the opening statements in the case against Zoran Vukotic from Vushtrria, who is charged with committing war crimes in Kosovo in early May 1999. Vukotovic is a former member of Serbia's reserve police forces, and allegedly committed war crimes against civilians in the Smrekovnica prison village of Studies near Vushtrri between 2 May and 3 May 1999.

At today's session, the public prosecutor and the defence gave him the opening remarks and the trial continues tomorrow listening to the first witness, reports Radio Contact Plus.

Vukotic's lawyer, Nebojsa Vlajic, told Radio Contact that the trial will last several months and that the public prosecutor expects all witnesses to be questioned before the end of this year.

Vukotovic was arrested on May 10th 2016, in Niksic based on an EULEX warrant, while Kosovo justice was handed over at the end of last year.
