The people living in the northern Iraqi area voted overwhelmingly in favour of independence for the Kurdistan region in Monday's controversial referendum.
The election commission said 92% of the 3.3 million Kurds and non-Kurdish who cast their votes supported independence broadcasts the Kosovo Clan.
The statement came despite a last-minute call by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abad, which the result would be “anult”.
The Iraqi prime minister urged Kurds instead of seeking independence to engage in dialogue with Baghdad “within the framework of the Constitution”.
Kurdish leaders have said the vote for “po” will give them a mandate to start negotiations on secession with the central government in Baghdad and neighbouring countries.
