King Salman of Saudi Arabia issued a decree allowing females to drive for the first time in the country's history.
According to local media, the ministries will prepare a report on the matter within 30 days and the king's order will be implemented by June 2018.
Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world that doesn't let women drive. Human rights groups have been trying for years to allow women to drive in the ultraconservative kingdom, and some women have been imprisoned after violating the rule.
The state news agency in Saudi Arabia announced that the royal decree enables the establishment of new regulations, including the grant of licenses to women.
The Saudi decision was welcomed by the US State Department as a step in the right direction. The royal decree states that the decision to grant women licenses will be made by respecting Sharia's standards, but without giving details.
Saudi media reported that most members of the council of veteran religious scholars supported
The king's idea.
