Jared Kouchner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, has used private enamel to perform official White House work, his lawyer said.
Kouchner is senior adviser to the president.
Lawyer Abbe Lowell confirmed that Kouchner, in the January-August period, “has accepted or returned less than 100 emails to White House colleagues from his personal account”.
During the election campaign, Trump has consistently criticised his Democrat rival Hillary Clinton for using private email during the time he was a secretary of state.
Trump said he'd lock Clinton up because of concerns he might have misused classified information.
Investigations into the case have been closed without charges.
Federal regulations specify how notes should be kept regarding the president and other government activities.
The use of private accounts could place official records beyond the approach of journalists, lawmakers and others seeking information available to the public.
