Angela Dorothea Cassner was born on July 17, 1954, in Hamburg, West Germany. His studies were conducted at Leipzig University from 1973 to 1978.

As a condition for taking office, Chancellor Merkel was asked to agree to report her colleagues to the Democratic Germany secret police. Merkel had refused, using the reasoning that she could not keep the secret of being a worthy spy.

Her husband, the scientist, Joachim Sauer, makes very little public presentation. Sauer is her second husband, while the Chancellor has kept her first husband's last name. Merkel has no children.

After the loss of Chancellor Helmut Kohl's party in 1998, Merkel had been appointed secretary general of the CDU. And on April 10, 2000, she became the first woman to lead a party.

At the September 24th 2017 vote, Merkel seeks to win the fourth term at Germany's helm.
