Donald Trump could become the first president of the United States to visit Belgrade since 1975, when then President Gerald Ford met with Marshal Tito in the capital of the Yugoslav Federation.
The invitation, due to be formalised soon, was made by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, during the meeting held a day earlier with US Senator Ron Johnson, a member of the US Senate Foreign Affairs Committee.
To have President Trump and Vice President Pence in Serbia at the moment is only one wish. But, as you know, I'm an insistent type and so far I've achieved what I loved”, Vucic told reporters.
The invitation to Trump reflects the desire for an approach between the Serbian president and the American, but also the approach between Serbia and the United States itself, despite resentment held since the war in Kosovo.
During meeting with Senator Johnson, Vucic did not hide even the desire for economic investment from the United States to arrive in Serbia, while he also stressed the possibility of a different dialogue on Kosovo, despite opposing views of the two countries.
The sheepicke also remains the issue of relations with Russia, which is considered a top strategic ally for Serbia. Johnson's request that Russian humanitarian centre Russian-Serbian personnel in Nis not be granted diplomatic status, Vucic responded by saying that, “Belgrade will decide exclusively based on its national interests”.
