Officials in the state of Uttar Pradesh admitted the supply was cut off, but said it had not caused the deaths, the BBC writes.
There were panics in hospitals with family trying to assist staff using manual respiratory bags, local media say.
Most of the victims were newborn children or were being treated by encephalitis.
