Portugal's civil protection institution, which co-ordinates efforts to extinguish fires, today announced that the record for this year of 220 fires has been registered for Friday.
More than 2,500 firefighters with over 800 vehicles and 15 air units were mobilised Saturday morning to face fires.
Portugal has been hit hard with fires this summer, which is marked by high temperatures and low rainfall. In June 64 people have lost their lives in deadly forest fires.
